At Rycan Retaining and Earthworks, we’re proud to be a family-owned and operated business based in Karana Downs, South East Queensland. Since our beginnings in 2012 as Rycan Maintenance, a one-man operation offering a wide range of services, we’ve grown into a trusted name in structural landscaping.
Over the years, we’ve worked with respected clients including ARA Building, Yes Optus, Cerebral Palsy Queensland, Suncorp Bank, Grill’d Restaurants, Churches of Christ Care, and SEQ Water. These partnerships helped shape our reputation for reliability and quality.
In 2020, we rebranded to Rycan Retaining and Earthworks, focusing exclusively on structural landscaping. We made a strategic decision to move away from general handyman services and dedicate ourselves to excavation and QBCC-licensed construction of retaining walls, fences, and decks.
Today, we’re proud to be a specialist provider serving Brisbane’s Western Suburbs and the Ipswich region. Our deep understanding of local terrain, council regulations, and building standards—combined with strong industry relationships—means we offer a seamless, end-to-end service for our clients. We’re passionate about helping homeowners unlock unrealised value in their properties and guiding them through the complexities of council approvals and building regulations with confidence and clarity.

Meet Ryan Parlane – Owner of Rycan Retaining and Earthworks
Ryan Parlane is the founder and driving force behind Rycan Retaining and Earthworks, bringing over 20 years of hands-on experience in building and heavy equipment operation across both commercial and residential sectors in Australia and his native New Zealand.
He holds a Builder – Restricted to Structural Landscaping and Low-Rise Site Supervisor QBCC Licence, and is a certified Civil Excavator Operator and licensed MC Truck Driver. These qualifications reflect his commitment to quality, safety, and industry best practices.

Ryan’s deep industry knowledge—earned through decades of practical work—gives him a unique ability to visualise and construct landscape structures that unlock the full potential and value of his clients’ land. From complex retaining walls to precision earthworks, Ryan approaches every project with a focus on durability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal.
Passionate About Safety, Mentorship, and Community
Easily spotted on-site thanks to his signature red hair and beard, Ryan is known not just for his skills but for his passion for safety, his love of Rugby Union (as any proud Kiwi would be), and his dedication to mentoring the next generation of builders. He actively supports local apprentices and enjoys sharing his knowledge with young tradespeople entering the industry.

Candice Parlane is Rycan’s Business Manager, overseeing the company’s operations with a strong foundation in structural landscaping and office management. Her experience spans construction, mining, and administration, giving her a comprehensive understanding of both on-site execution and behind-the-scenes coordination.
Candice’s extensive knowledge of local council laws and compliance requirements is a key strength, ensuring every project meets regulatory standards and progresses smoothly through approvals and planning stages.
Known for her hands-on approach, Candice regularly attends quote inspections and operates machinery on-site, demonstrating her commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes and supporting the team wherever needed.
Driven by a genuine passion for helping others, Candice takes pride in guiding clients through the landscaping process and creating outdoor spaces that are both functional and visually striking.
